DUBLIN, Ohio — The OhioHealth Emerald City Half and Quarter Marathon will celebrate its sixth anniversary when a sold out field of 3,500 runners and walkers and a team of firefighters in full gear participate in 13.1-mile and 6.55-mile events on August 23.
The “Run For Fallen Heroes” will once again highlight the Emerald City Half & Quarter Marathon. The charity run features two three-man relay teams of firefighters in full gear who compete to raise money for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The event is coordinated by First Due Endurance Racing, a Central Ohio-based racing team comprised of local firefighters and their families.
“The Emerald City Half & Quarter Marathon has grown into the ultimate end of summer celebration of the healthy and active lifestyle,” Race Director David Babner. “We are proud to partner with OhioHealth, the City of Dublin and the Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau to produce an experience that among the best events in Central Ohio.”
The Emerald City Half & Quarter Marathon begins and ends at Dublin Methodist Hospital. The 13.1-mile course features Glacier Ridge Metro Park and the Honda Wetlands.
The Emerald City Half & Quarter Marathon concludes with a free post-race party at Buffalo Wild Wings featuring complimentary appetizers and a free Deep Eddy Vodka cocktail (21 and over). All participants also receive an Official Gender-Specific Event Shirt and Official Finisher's Medal.
The “Run For Fallen Heroes” will feature two relay teams of three firefighters in full gear. Each firefighter will run two two-mile segments of the Emerald City Half Marathon. The firefighters will stop each mile to change their self-contained breathing apparatus. The relay teams will join together at the 12.75-miile mark to finish the half marathon. Each relay team will be accompanied by a “captain” that will run the full Half Marathon.
“We believe we are the only firefighters that have finished an event of this distance wearing full firefighting gear AND breathing air for their self-contained breathing apparatus,” said Nick Thornton of First Due Endurance Racing. “We are proud to be the first to complete this challenge each year at the Emerald City Half & Quarter Marathon and even more proud that the proceeds will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.”
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation honors and remembers America's fallen fire heroes and provides resources to assist their survivors in rebuilding their lives. The organization is also spearheading a safety initiative that strives to reduce the line-of-duty deaths by 25 percent over the next five years. For more information, visit www.firehero.org.
