DUBLIN, Ohio — First Due Endurance Racing will again bring its unique "Run For Fallen Heroes" relay team to the Emerald City Half and Quarter Marathon in 2013.
The charity run will feature at least two three-man relay teams of firefighters in full gear who will compete in the 13.1-mile half marathon to raise money for the children of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, 19 firefighters who died battling a wildfire in Arizona. The money will be raised through the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
First Due Endurance Racing is a Central Ohio-based racing team comprised of local firefighters and their families. Its first charity event was held at the Emerald City Half & Quarter Marathon in 2012.
The "Run For Fallen Heroes" will feature at least two relay team of three firefighters in full gear. Each firefighter will run two two-mile segments of the Emerald City Half Marathon. The firefighters will stop each mile to change their self-contained breathing apparatus. A captain who will run the entire half marathon will accompany the relay team.
Firefighters from the following departments will participate: Columbus, Franklin Township, Grandview, Mifflin Township, Upper Arlington and Washington Township.
"We believe that last year was the first time that firefighters attempted to finish an event of this distance wearing full firefighting gear AND breathing air for their self-contained breathing apparatus," said Nick Thornton of First Due Endurance Racing. "We were proud to be the first to complete this challenge and we are proud to return this year to raise funds and awareness for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Granite Mountain Hotshots."
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation honors and remembers fallen firefighters and assists their families and coworkers. For more information and to donate to the Granite Mountain Hotshots, visit http://ow.ly/nqQj8.
